Roofing Calculator

Roofing is probably one of the most difficult projects to attempt by yourself. If however you have a very low pitch ( angle ) on your roof and it is only one story, and you are adventuresome, you might try taking this on. Please keep in mind that doing a roof requires constant progress. It is not the type of project that you do only on the weekend (unless you have a ton of tarps). Try doing small sections at a time, or plan on doing just the back side on one weekend from start to finish. If you are stripping the roof it is even more important ! Remember that everything that you strip off has to be completed or tarped by the end of the day. You do not want  to add re-doing all of your ceilings to your project list because you got caught in a rain storm.

A word of Caution is required for roofing. This is a project almost always taken on by a professional. When you take into account the height and a slippery surface, casual do it yourselfers should BEWARE. Always keep in mind where you are, believe it or not,  the most common accidents occur when workers get too comfortable on the roof and forget that one slip and its an express trip to the driveway.

SOME OF THE TOOLS REQUIRED FOR ROOFING;

  • Heavy Gloves
  • Jeans or long pants
  • Pitch Fork or Flat Shovel (for stripping)
  • Roof Brackets and Planks for protection
  • Ladders
  • Hammer
  • Pry bar / Flat bar
  • Stapler
  • Utility knife
  • Tape Measure
  • Chalk Line

NOTE: This calculator is based on the fact that if you are going to do it yourself you are comfortable on a ladder and can get the required measurements. If not,  have a professional measure your roof.

All roofing is figured by squares or per 100 square feet of roof. The most popular styles are based on 3 bundles per square. Heavier shingles such as the architect style are figured at 4 bundles a square. Find a style and color in Roofing Products

What is the width of the roof ?
What is the distance from the gutter to the ridge (or top of roof)
Is the opposite side of the roof identical YES NO
IF "NO" add additional square footage here.
Total linear feet requiring cap shingles
What is the total # of feet along the gutter or bottom of the roof?

width x dist to ridge = square feet
If opp is same sq/ft x 2
If "no" sq/ft + additional
= total square feet

---tot sq/ft / 100= # of squares needed
--- tot sq/ft / 400 = # rolls tar paper

---tot lin/ft cap / 30 = # of bundles for cap

tot feet along gutter/10 = # pc. of drip edge
tot feet along gutter= lin feet of peel an stick, ice and water barrier
