COSTS : DECKING

Most Contractors are going to charge between $15 and $20 a square foot for a generic deck. Some include the price for stairs. For a very plain low to the ground deck your price may get as low as $12 sq/ft. ( buyer beware). The higher your deck is the more it is likely to cost you. Ask your contractor if footings are included, if not they could cost $50  to $100 each. Stock for a deck generally is between $5 and $9 sq./ft, ( not incl. footings ) depending on the complexity and the area you live in.
If you are building a set of stairs yourself for the deck, The cost for stairs with a railing on both sides is about $30 per step ( based on 6 - 8 steps). Less if you only have one railing and a little more if you are using higher quality lumber. Keep in mind, if you only have two or three steps it may average out a little higher, and a very large set will average lower.
If you are having them built it's about double the cost per step.( these figures apply only to exterior generic stairs)
